Description:

King Shaka International Airport

The King Shaka International Airport just outside Durban Kwazulu Natal is a world-class airport that came into operation on 1 May 2010

Passenger information:

Directions

Follow the N2 freeway to the new N2 Interchange to the system of roads feeding into the airport and Dube Trade Port's road circulation networks

The new N2 interchange is the primary access road to the airport. The southbound carriageway to the N2 is to become a toll road

The plans are to provide sufficient flexibility to ensure that all future transportation requirements have been considered

Local access roads will include routes to the staff parking, open parking, multi-storey parkade, car rental, and drop-off and pick-up areas

Landside

This is the area outside the terminal building used by people and vehicles. It includes the roads network, with access to all areas of the airport precinct, car rental facilities, public parkades, shaded parking areas, administrative buildings and various other services and facilities

The area is freely accessible to all users of the airport. Pedestrian and vehicle movements are guided and managed by Acsa with the support of eThekwini Metro Police

Pick-up and Drop

Pick-up areas are situated alongside the piazza, with separate provision for private vehicles and public transport Drop-off area is situated on the elevated roadway outside the departures hall at the terminal building

Public transport facilities have been provided within the precinct and cater for both tour bus and accredited metered taxi demands

Parking paradise

A multi-storey parkade caters for 1 500 vehicles, while there is a total of 6 500 vehicle parking bays at the new airport - making the parking problems at the old airport really something of the past

Parking tariffs in the shaded area will be R12 for one hour, R15 for two hours, R20 for three hours, R25 for four hours, R35 for six hours, R55 for 10 hours and R75 for a full day

Secured parking areas will cost car owners R6 for 15 to 30 minutes, R10 for an hour, R20 for two hours, R25 for three hours, R30 for four hours, R55 for six hours, R110 for 10 hours and R160 for a full day

There will be signs indicating car rental returns to lead passengers to the correct car rental agency

Pedestrians

Pedestrian movement within the development area is catered for through the provision of sidewalks where significant numbers of pedestrians are anticipated

Acsa said a conscious effort has been made to minimise conflict between pedestrians, buildings and vehicles through the development of a "pedestrian sensitive" traffic routing plan

On the inside

The immediate focus at the new airport is inevitably the terminal building, with its impressive 150m roof span and it is where all passengers and the people who transport and meet and greet will gather

The building incorporates the very latest design concepts to make the working environment as effective as possible and to make a passenger's movement through the necessary processes from arrival to departure as smooth and pleasant as possible

The terminal is clearly demarcated between those areas freely accessible to the general public, through to security checkpoints From there, either a boarding pass or security permit is required for access

Services

To assist passengers, Acsa will have iHelp Agents placed strategically within the airport who will assist passengers with information, directions and hand out useful leaflets

Please look out for these assistants as they will be dressed up in T-shirts that will say, "Help!"

Ready to go

Airside is the part of the airport that is completely "security controlled". It is bounded by the security checkpoints in the terminal building and extends to the airfield itself

It is only accessible by a passenger with a valid boarding pass or airport staff with a relevant security permit

This area includes the passenger holding lounges and allows access to the apron area, where aircraft are parked and serviced

Passengers with a valid boarding pass are restricted to specific areas within the general airside
