Tembe Elephant Park is situated in the northern western of Zululand and is 30000 hectares in extent and was opened to the public in 1991.
Although the park falls within the malaria risk zone, malaria is not a major issue as there has been a successful spraying program over a number of years.
The Elephants in the park are known for their large tusks and migrate seasonally between Mozambique and Maputuland in the extreme north of KwaZulu Natal.
The Tembe Elephant Park covers a large area on the border of KwaZulu Natal running in extent of 300km².
The park consists of dense sand forests, woodlands, grasslands and swamplands. These different terrains are ideal for Elephants to survive and breed successfully.
The park with its tropical and sub-tropical vegetation also hosts many other animals such as bird & insects, lion, black and white Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo, cerval Cats, Hyena, Giraffe, Leopard, Jackal, Wildebeest, Kudu, water Buck, Reed Buck, Wartog and more other antelope species, with Bush Babies and Duikers to view. Also there have been seen some 340 bird species in the park.
Visitors can go on sal\farie game drives on open 4x4 vehicle mainly in the morning and afternoon/evening.
Visitors can explore the park in own vehicles but must be in 4 wheel drive vehicles as the roads are mostly soft sand.
The Tembe Elephant Park can be access via the N22 north bound towards Pelindaba.
Opening hours to the park is:
Between October to March from 5 am to 7 pm and in the winter April to September 6 am to 4 pm.

There is no restcamp, no campground and no store in the park. Only the Tembe Elephant Lodge offers accommodation in luxury safari tents with all meals provided.
