As one of the first oldest reserves in South Africa, Hluhluwe and Umfolozi reserves wad combined to form a single park, Hluhluwe Umfolozi in the heart of Zulualnd.
The main focus today is the tourists and attracted by the largest, one fifth, of the world’s black and white Rhino population in one park.
Hluhluwe Umfolozi park is located in central Zululand. It is situated just off the N2 between Hluhluwe and from the south the Umfolozi river on the N2 main north coast road. Most of the roads in the reserve are gravel.
Visitors to the Hluhluwe Umfolozi will encounter a large variety of wildlife besides the big five i.e. Rhino, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Buffalo.
Accommodation in the Hluhluwe section of the park park there are lodge or self-catering accommodation at Mtwazi, Hilltop, Muntulu and Munyawaneni.
Accommodation in the Umfolozi section is provided at Masinda,Mpila, Sontuli, Nselweni, Gqoyeni, Hlathikhulu, Mpila, Sontuli, Nselweni,Gqoyeni and Hlathikhulu camps.
These reserves was established in 1895 and game viewing is the prime attraction. Viewing hides overlook pans and waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range.
Todat the reserve became world renowned for its white rhino conservation.
Also there are the famous wilderness trails. It is also renowned for its Game Capture unit recently upgraded into the Centenary Capture Centre, a bench mark for animal capture and sustainable utilization throughout Africa.
The area of the Park now covers some 96 000 ha and contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora.
Visitors can indulge in game-viewing drives, the two self-guided auto trails which provide information on both the management and natural history of the reserve.
Guided walks are also available and best done in the early morning and late afternoon because of the crouching Zululand humid hot climate.
The Hluhluwe dam has a 40 seater boat and takes visitors on guided trips twice a day and is conducted by an experienced community guide. From here visitors can see a large range of birds and animals within the park while the Zulu culture is covered in the community areas outside.
