Vryheid is situated in Northern KwaZulu-Natal in the rural regional area surrounded by rivers like the White and Black Umfolozi, Mkhuze and Pongolo and part of the Tukhela catchment which create various wetlands like the well known Blood river, Aloeboom and Lenjane.
The population has a mix of Zulu, Afrikaans, German, English and European cultures.
The region's economic structure consists of farming, mining, timber and small industry, with wattle and timber plantations and maize and groundnuts.
The area in and around Vryheid is rich in history amongst others from the Bushmen to the British, and the Anglo-Boer battlefield, the Vryheid Hill reserve outside town offers a lot to the visitor.
Through Vryheid runs the railway line from eastern Mpumalanga the coal and bulk cargo port of Richards Bay on the north coast of KwaZulu Natal.
