Pietermaritzburg being capital and second largest city of the province of KwaZulu-Natal was founded in 1838.
In Zulu, Pietermaritzburg is called umGungundlovu, ("purist" ) alsojust plain PMB.
It's an industrial hub, producing aluminium, timber and dairy products due to its favourable climate. It has many schools and tertiary education institutions, including a campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The population made up of 25% to 30% are identified as Indians or Whites.
Pietermaritzburg lies on the major road between the Pretoria-Johannesburg and the harbour of Durban, which is 90 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg.
The airport provides domestic air services to the rest of South Africa. The railway station is in the city centre and connects directly to Durban and Johannesburg as well as to other major cities in South Africa.
