Kosi Bay in northern Maputuland forms part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park known as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, with four interlinked lakes make up Kosi Bay Estuary. The lakes are part of a UNISEC World Heritage Site and has unique characteristics.
Manguzi, some 13 kilometres away from Kosi Bay situated in a rural area is the nearest town and Kosi Bay Estury itself is only 2 kilometres from the southern border of Mozambique where the border post namely Ponto do Ouro is.
This stretch of beach at Kosi Bay is the quietest and the most isolated one will find in South Africa. The estuary of Kosi Bay is known as the ‘Aquarium" as the water in the estuary is very clear and maitain a abundance of fish. Also Kosi Bay is a bird's watchers paradise and includes the Pal-nut, Pells Fish Owl and many more indigenous species of bird life to observe.
Animals such as the Duiker, hippopotamus, crocodiles and Bull Sharks are also to be observed. The endangered loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach which can be observed during the night.
There are five different species of Mangrove trees in the area of the estuary which serves as a filtration source for the clear water in the estury and protects manya small animals suchh as crabs and shrimp.
The locals build fish traps in which they catch fish in the swallow water of the estuary as the fish move in and out with the sea tides.
A superb wild-life experience awaits the nature-lover's visitor.
