It is safe for travellers in and around KwaZulu Natal provided a few basic precautions are adhered to.


It is recommended that especially foreign travellers keep to the following safety advice at all times:


  •  Get the hotel where you reside to lock-up your valuables such as jewellery and cash
  •  Never wear expensive jewellery in public places such as clubs and to outdoor events
  •  Photographic equipment is to be kept in hand or in its box and close in hand when not used
  •  Vehicle doors and windows must always be locked and closed especially when driving in cities
  •  Never leave shopping bags and valuables on the vehicle seats and visible from outside, but lock it in the boot
  •  Luggage must never be left unattended or supervised by the hotel staff
  •  Always park vehicle in a well lit area or in a paid parking lot or under the supervision of a car attendant
  •  Keep your hotel room door locked and make sure you know who is at the other side before answering the door knock
  •  Carry only limited or necessary cash on you when going out and rather make use of a debit/credit card
  •  Never draw money from an remote ATM at night and keep you pin secret. Never accept assistance from anyone should you experience problems at the ATM but report to you Bank immediately
  • Do not give your credit card to a waiter in a restaurant to go and cash up but request to do it yourself at the table or  counter when leaving
  • It is best to ask your hotel concierge for directions should you not know your direction and have a area road map      with you

  •  When travelling in rural areas always be on the wash out for stray animals and obey the road signage
  •  Typical vaccinations like typhoid and injections against hepatitis A and B are a necessity
  •  Smoking is generally prohibited in public places and restaurants even in some sporting stadiums
  •  It is wise to consult your doctor for any other risky areas and precautions such as malaria and a yellow fever        inoculation is required for travellers coming from infected areas
  • Always keep near to or in sight of other people when visiting beaches or recreation areas such as parks and walkways
    Remember to keep an eye out for pedestrians and always give them the right of way at road crossings
